DNA section

The Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) profiling technology is considered as one of the most useful tool in crime investigation and has gained universal acceptance as forensic tool. The DNA section of state forensic science laboratory Bengaluru, Karnataka, started functioning in the year 2008 and since then it has contributed enormously in solving several different types of cases like parentage, identification of individuals involved in rape, gang rape cases, murder cases, unidentified bodies recovered during mass disasters. The section undertakes DNA profiling examination from various human biological samples such as blood, saliva, semen, foetus, tissues, bone, teeth, hairs, nails and the materials stained with biological samples.

Over the past decade, the laboratory has established technological capabilities, for speedy disposal of cases.

With enhanced expertise, the DNA section has handled and reported sensitive cases such as Jnanabharathi gang rape, Baskar Shetty case and Mysuru gang rape case etc.The inflow of cases has increased ten-fold since inception. The coming years will see a new revolution as the DNA technology comes of age and becomes widely available.
