Toxicology Section

Toxicology is defined as the science embodying the knowledge,source,character,fatal  effect,lethal dose,analysis of poisons and remedial measures.Four main catagories in toxicology are forensic,Industrial,clinical and environmental.Forensic toxicology is the application of analytical chemistry related to poisononous substances on living organism.Fore;nsic toxicologists are also primarily concerned with the medico legal aspects of the harmful effects of chemicals on human and animals.

The expertise of forensic toxicologistsis primarily utilized in establishing the cause of death and elucidating its circumstances in post-mortem   investigation.  The  work  of   forensic  toxicologist  is therefore  considered  as highly  complicated  as  small quantities of  poisons and their metabolites are to be isolated, purified and quantified from a highly complex matrices.

The cases referred to Toxicology section are mainly the post mortem samples which includes body fluids like blood, urine, gastric lavage, vomitus, autopsied samples of tissues like stomach, liver, kidney, spleen, heart, lungs, brain etc or any other physical material (soil, clothes, syringes, bottles, tins etc) and in  live cases, blood and urine samples are received in drunken driving cases. The section examines the volatile, non volatile, synthetic and plant poisons, insecticides, metallic alkaloid poisons, drugs which include tranquillizers, sedatives, hypnotics, anaesthetics, chemicals etc. from the forensic matrix.
